Bauchi: Abubakar Suleiman returns as Speaker, Akuyam steps down

Barely a month after their reelection in a rerun election, Abubakar Suleiman has resumed his position as Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, along with his Deputy, Jamilu Dahiru.

Abubakar’s emergence follows the resignation of the former Speaker, Babayo Mohammed Akuyam, and his Deputy, Ahmed Abdullahi, during Wednesday’s plenary session.

The outgoing Speaker and Deputy announced their resignation as part of an agreement among lawmakers to make way for Abubakar Suleiman’s return if reelected.

They expressed gratitude to their colleagues and assembly staff for their support during their tenure.

In his acceptance speech, Suleiman thanked the outgoing Speaker and Deputy for their professionalism and pledged to continue delivering effective legislation for the welfare of the people.

Recall that Abubakar Suleiman and Jamilu Umar Dahiru, both of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, were returned to the House after winning the rerun election.

The rerun elections in four state constituencies followed the nullification results of elections earlier held on March 18, 2023 by the State Election Petitions Tribunal.

The nullification was upheld by the Court of Appeal, which ordered the rerun in the affected 42 polling units of 16 electoral wards in three LGAs of Bauchi, Ningi and Katagum of Bauchi State.

Consequently, Suleiman won the Ningi State House Constituency rerun election.

Similarly, the Deputy Speaker, Jamilu Dahiru also emerged winner of the Bauchi Central Constituency rerun election.
