In a responsible country, when the President of the United States accuses our nation of genocide, and this issue spreads across the global stage, one would expect our own President to promptly address his people. In a serious and responsible nation, leadership must rise to the occasion in moments like this.
Even President Donald J. Trump of the United States has come forward to make a public statement directed at the Nigerian government. Yet, here we are, without a caring and competent leader who can speak to the pains and cries of Nigerians.
A responsible President would come out and say:
“My people, I hear your pain. I hear your cries. I acknowledge the killings happening across our land, whether among Christians or Muslims. No Nigerian should be killed under our watch.”
That is the number one responsibility of any responsible leader and government: the protection of lives and property.
Instead, what do we see? Silence. Confusion. And the people left to beg a foreign leader for help. A true leader would have addressed the nation, urging calm and reassuring citizens that the government is in control. He would have told Nigerians not to be carried away by foreign intervention, yes, we appreciate their concern, but assured them that Nigeria would take charge, and where necessary, seek collaboration and intelligence support from allies.
But except for those in government who are themselves complicit, those who are part and parcel of the killings and the ongoing genocide, what we see today is shameful.
It is shameful that some governors are still holding meetings with bandits. How can a government sit face-to-face with criminals, and yet, the next day, those same people go out to attack innocent citizens? That clearly means the Nigerian government knows these killers. They know where they are. If the government can summon them for a meeting, it means they are known, and that is proof of complicity.
Should Nigerians not begin to ask serious questions? Should we not start to think that those in power actually know our killers, and have failed in their civic duty to keep this nation safe?
Above all, it is even more disheartening that the President of Nigeria does not see the need to address his citizens, to say, “I hear you, I see your pain, and I will do something about it.”
The truth is this: these killings are unacceptable. We cannot continue this way.
I hope that come 2027 general election, Nigerians will choose wisely. Let us ensure that the elections are not rigged. Let us reject the same old politicians, those who have nothing to offer our country except their long experience in corruption and mismanagement. We need leaders with genuine experience in governance, compassion, and a clear vision to make Nigeria great again.
