The United States has carried out deadly airstrikes against terrorist groups in Nigeria, former President Donald Trump has confirmed.
The strikes reportedly came just one day after a bomb attack hit a mosque in Maiduguri, the capital of Nigeria’s northeastern Borno State, killing five people and leaving dozens injured. Authorities suspect the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber.
According to The New York Post, Nigeria has continued to battle persistent insecurity fueled by armed militant groups, including Boko Haram and the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP).
Last month, Trump warned that the US would withdraw aid from Nigeria and potentially take direct military action if the government failed to curb extremist violence, particularly attacks targeting Christians. In a Truth Social post dated November 1, he said he had instructed the “War Department” to prepare for possible action against what he described as “terrorist thugs” operating in the country.
In a related move, the Trump administration recently recalled more than two dozen US ambassadors appointed under former President Joe Biden, including those serving in Nigeria and several other African nations.
Since returning to office in January, Trump has authorized or overseen US military strikes in multiple regions, including Yemen, Somalia, Iraq, Iran, Syria, the Caribbean Sea, and the Eastern Pacific Ocean.
